While in Kenya during April teaching at our School of Ministry, my assignment was to teach part one of the New Testament Survey. To God be the Glory as Holy Spirit made it exciting and not dull and boring!

I noticed something I had never seen before when I have taught subject this in the past. The first four writers of the Gospels didn’t come from the professional priesthood. They had no formal training to be in ministry. They didn’t grow up looking for a way to be discovered so they could move up the ministry success ladder. The first four Gospel writers were simple men who were impacted by the life and ministry of Jesus.

In fact their secular work was as follows:

Matthew – tax collector
Mark – possibly a writer
Luke – medical doctor
John – fisherman/business owner

Every one of the first twelve disciples were businessmen…common working class men…ordinary, everyday men who were being faithful at what they were doing in the secular world, and yet God touched them, changed them and used them to turn the world upside down.

I believe very passionately that one of the next moves of God will come in what is known as marketplace ministry. While there will always be the need for men and women who will sacrifice a career in business, education or politics to give themselves to the full time work of the ministry, more and more people are going accept the challenge of the Lord to enter the market place as secret evangelists.

You will soon hear of prayer meetings, healings, lunch hour Bible Studies that begin to touch the lives of people in the workplace and bring revival to those on Main Street USA! These meetings will be led by people who have been strategically placed in the workplace to bring forth the coming move of God in this arena.

One of our pastors in Kenya was recently moved to a large city in South Central Kenya. One of the first ministries he started after moving there was a lunch hour meeting. It started very small and just since mid February, this lunch hour meeting is packing out his church; during the middle of the day! He told me recently that it was very humbling and exciting to see men & running on their lunch hour to the church just to be in the Presence of God and the preaching of His word.

I am beginning to see men and women all around the world being called into marketplace ministry. This type of ministry is just as important and just as needful as my job is to travel to Kenya four to five times per year to teach & train pastors.

On September 23, 1857, Jeremy Lanphier began a lunch hour prayer meeting in New York City with only six people. On October 10th, the Stock Market crashed. Within six months, 10,000 were attending noon prayer meetings in New York City alone. This prayer meeting sparked a major move of God in the New York area.

Marketplace ministers, arise! If not us then who? If not here, then where? If not now, then when?

Blessings,
David & Pam
